What's New at AgroExpo?

The FFA Crop Management Challenge is an opportunity for FFA Students across the state of Michigan to develop a deeper understanding of production agriculture. Students are tasked with deciding tillage practices, designing nutrient programs, promoting their projects on social media, and developing their public speaking skills while presenting their management decisions to judges. Teams are judged on their crop's yield, profits, their presentation, and a final report.

FFA Students visited the North Central Research Station in June to learn about fertilizer applications at planting, how to determine growth stages of their crops, and how to perform root digs.

This year, we were fortunate enough to have events in person again. Some of the in-person activities included field days that were held at the North Central Research Station. Students competing in the contest had the opportunity to hear presentations and complete hands-on learning tasks with industry experts. Topics included planter components, crop growth stages, yield checks, pest management, and many other topics were explored. This was a new aspect to the Crop Management Challenge, but was well recepted by both advisors and students.

‍And The Winner Is...

This past week, the 2021 FFA Crop Management Challenge results were released. The placings are as follows:

The top 3 teams for the Soybean management contest are:

  • 1st Place             Lapeer
  • 2nd Place            Ovid-Elsie
  • 3rd Place             Ionia

The top 3 teams in the Corn management contest are:

  • 1st Place             Ithaca
  • 2nd Place            Coleman
  • 3rd Place             Chesaning

These teams will  be recognized at the 2022 Michigan FFA State Convention. First place teams will also receive a traveling trophy. We want to congratulate all who competed and thank the students for all of their hard work that they put into their projects this year!

This contest would not be possible without the help of our generous sponsors. Our sponsors not only were able to assist with the contest financially, but were able to help with the educational field days that were held at the North Central Research Station. Thank you to our 2021 FFA Crop Management Contest Sponsors.
